Birmingham University under the leadership of Professor Rex Harris has developed a zero-emission hydrogen hybrid canal boat, the Ross Barlow. This has been launched and could be used for sustainable local transport in Birmingham.
One possibility is that it will feature in the new canalside environment included in the new Sainsbury’s complex in Selly Oak, Birmingham and used for a serene trip into the city centre through leafy Edgbaston (As a local I can’t wait!).
This could herald the dawn of a new era in canal transport for non pleasure craft, because of it’s extremely low running costs and sustainable energy source.
