After Anderton Boat lift the canal drifts along uninterrupted by locks until nearing Middlewich, where there is a busy section leading to the Shroppie junction in the south of the town. Midldewich like Northwich is a long standing industrial smallish town isloated in rural siroundings. There’s a long history of salt production here and for the last decades century chemical works have moved in. These are vast industrial sites now largely owned by Indian multinationals like Tata. Their presence is always visible from the canal in one direction or another. Leaving the Anderton Boatlift and heading south is rural in outlook. Middlewich is a strange mixture. Keep your viewpoint low or in a certain direction, and like many other canal scenes the passage through the urban areas appears tranquil and rural. Very pleasant!
