This flight is usually known as "The Caen Hill Flight". It was completed in about 1810 when the K&A was opened. Prior to this a parallel tramway carried goods to & from Devizes between the completed ends of the canal.

How Caen came to be used is unclear. The hill was known as Cane & Kane, naturally the English pronounce Caen as "cane".

Hi Pete, thanks for your comment which I'm sure will help others.

Firstly, the slideshows on canalscene.com run under Adobe flash Player. So they won't run with apple products - ipad and iphone - because apple don't support the Flash Player.
(Soon, the software I use for creating these will be able to produce HTML5 slideshows which will - I will then need to recreate them all!!)

Secondly, if you're not using apple, you may have a pop-up blocker set in your browser - a little message should "pop up" at the top telling you that a pop-up has been blocked and normally it will ask you to click on something to allow the pop-up. This default can probably be changed in the Settings or Options of your Browser, if you wish.

Thirdly, when you click on the slideshow you may get a message saying you need to download Adobe Flash Player - you should follow the instructions for this - the Flash Player is used very widely and is harmless. (This is likely to happen with the Firefox browser).

I have just tested the slideshow on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers and all work.

Hope this Helps,
Keep visiting the site!

Hi - I can't get your slideshow to run - is there a problem? By the way, I've shedloads of digital camera photos from when the barge canal was being restored; would anyone be interested in copies? Cheers, Pete
