Well we are now out of central Birmingham and in a leafier area. This first section of the Stratford-upon-Avon canal, 7 miles, winds its way through pretty well-to-do areas, with many high-end apartments overlooking the canal. Approaching Whitlocks End, Bridge 11 there is a very interesting diversion by foot. It is to the Akamba African garden centre in Whitlocks End just 700 yards from Bridge 11. Imagine my surprise having alighted at the Whitlocks End train station and setting off towards the canal I encountered this extraordinary sight below…

Dickens Heath is a new village half way along this section of the canal. It is largely composed of apartments with a very pleasant village green and commercial/restaurant centre.

Earlswood has some lovely scenes just a stone’s throw south of Bridge 17 as can be seen left as you walk to the lakes 1/2 miles away – bend in road where Salter Street meets Shutt Lane.
