Montgomery Canal at Frankton LocksA canal photo trip south along the very peaceful and rural Montgomery canal from its junction with the Llangollen canal at Frankton in the north down to Maesbury.

The canal has been partially restored and has several unconnected sections currently. The canal runs from Frankton to Newtown, a distance of 33 miles. This is one of the most superbly peaceful and rurally picturesque stretches of canal I have seen! It is a rewarding and enriching experience to descend the locks from Frankton and continue until you find your idea of a perfect evening and overnight mooring. Do try it, if you’re on your way along the Llangollen to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct!

This page describes the most northerly section currently navigable from Frankton to Newtown, a distance of 8 miles. The photos were taken during August 2011, with some good sunny weather, but generally quite changeable as was the whole of the summer months (my perception).
