The Caen Hill Flight is of 16 locks forming the middle section of the 29 locks of the Devises Lock Flight. This the steepest lock flight known, so steep that in order to replenish the water the locks large individual side ponds were built instead of the usual smaller side pounds; each pond holds a million gallons of water. A back pump was installed at Foxhangers near lock 22 in 1996 capable of pumping 300,000 gallons of water per hour back up the hill.
