Hatton Locks 27/08/10

These 21 locks lead down to Warwick on the Grand Union canal from the village of Hatton. The locks are all double ones replacing the single ones in the 1930’s to increase throughput. The originals are largely still there but converted into service waterways.

I followed nb Ten Bob Note through the top locks. The owner Ernie Williams kindly agreed for me to publish some photos here. He was accompanied by his wife and, contrary to legendary practice, they shared the labour of the locks and I must say were most accomplished at this.

Here are some photos of the journey.

Ernie has his own website Ernie’s Place where he diaries his travels around the country. He tells me they live on the boat and are heading for London which they will target to reach leisurely in about 4 weeks.
